The FDA and the Electronic Cigarette: Fact or fiction?
If you have been following Electronic Cigarettes like I have, then on Weds July 22, 2009 you would have heard the news “FDA Deems E-Cigs As Bad As The Real Thing”. Could this be possible? Could we all be wrong about E-Cigs being a healthier alternative than Tobacco products. After all that I have learned about smoking and the contents of cigarettes, I don’t put any faith in this news.
If you have been following my blog, you will remember my posting Hello E-Cigs, Goodbye Nasty Looks. In that posting, I stated the fact that the smoke from burning tobacco contains more than 4000 chemicals including more than 40 cancer causing agents and 200 known poisons. How can the E-Cig be anywhere near as bad as that? What about the 1 carcinogen that was found in Electronic Cigarettes? The chemical Diethylene glycol, is this really in all Electronic Cigarette cartridges?
Based on what the news articles state, the FDA had tested 19 cartridges from 2 manufacturers, Smoking Everywhere and Njoy. Isn’t kind of odd that the 2 companies that were tested, are also the same 2 companies that have had previously legal issues with the FDA. Out of the 19 that were tested only 1 contained Diethylene glycol, and that was at approximately 1%. Somehow with these facts, I don’t see how Electronic Cigarette can be anywhere near as dangerous as traditional cigarettes.
The other items that were mentioned in these news articles are as wildly fictional as comparing tobacco health risks to electronic cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes come in multiple flavors so that they can be marketed to children and adolescents. I have looked at numerous sites that are selling Electronic Cigarettes, and have always seen it stated that these devices are intended for adults that are of legal smoking age. Other news articles explain that using Electronic Cigarettes may cause smokers to continue to be addicted to Nicotine. Last time I checked, Electronic Cigarettes were not being marketed as a smoking cessation device.
For more information about this news from the standpoint of Electronic Cigarettes, you may want to check out what the Electronic Cigarette Association has posted as their official response to the FDA’s story about Electronic Cigarettes. Click here to view the article.

E-Cigarettes are good for the Environment
How often have you been driving down the road and you have seen someone flick their cigarette butt out their car window? Most people that flick their cigarette butts out their window don’t consider it to be littering. Wouldn’t it be nice to help the environment by smoking E-Cigarettes instead of making a mess with those smelly cigarette butts? I think some people don’t realize how valuable the invention of E-Cigs really are.
Worldwide, smokers toss at least 4.5 trillion cigarette butts each year, accounting for 38% of worldwide debris. I guess that it doesn’t seem like a lot when it’s just one cigarette butt. Cigarette butts are the most common debris item collected over seas. During the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, in 2007 there were 1,971,551 cigarette filters, cigar tips, and tobacco packaging.
Even though individually, cigarette butts are small, they take up a large volume of space. If a person smokes a pack-and-a half a day, they will consume more than 10,000 cigarettes in a year. This number of cigarette butts will fill a volume of five liters.
Just how harmful are these discarded cigarettes butts? The average cigarette butt contains numerous chemicals which may be considered a health hazard. They are made of synthetic polymer cellulose acetate and never degrade. They only break apart after roughly 12 years. Within an hour of contact with water, cigarette butts can begin leaching chemicals such as cadmium, lead and arsenic into the marine environment.
Looking at the by product of smoking, it appears that there are toxins in everything. The cigarette smoke is bad for the smoker and anyone that is close enough to inhale the second hand smoke. The cigarette butts are harmful to environment and to wildlife. This is all because a smoker needs to get their nicotine fix. By using an electronic cigarette, a smoker will be able to get their nicotine without making the Mother Nature pay for their messy habit.
