We all know about the health benefits from either not smoking, or using an electronic cigarette for the smoker, but what about for those around them. Are smokers really polluting the air just to get that nicotine fix?
As a smoker, I remember the looks of irritation and disgust when a non-smoker would walk by as I was smoking outside. I had always thought that they were being overly dramatic. We are both outside, so how much toxic smoke are they really getting?
When a smoker exhales, there are more than 4000 chemicals including more than 40 cancer causing agents and 200 known poisons. Secondhand smoke has been classified by the EPA as a Class A carcinogen – a substance known to cause cancer in humans. It also contains twice as much tar and nicotine, three times as much cancer-causing benzpyrene, five times as much carbon monoxide, and ammonia.
Having thought about those numbers, makes me realize how much better the E-Cig is. In hindsight, it makes me realize that I did deserve those nasty looks. And to think, that is from strangers on the street, what about my loved ones? I am an ex-smoker, but I still get my nicotine fix, and it is no longer at the expense of those around me. I can rest knowing that I am not causing my children to experience increased frequency of asthma, colds, bronchitis, pneumonia, and other lung diseases. It makes me feel better knowing that my friends and loved ones can now breathe easier.
